Career Coaching for Academic Scientists

Are you clear on your next steps, career-wise? Do you have a clear vision of your path to promotion? Do you feel secure in your marketability, should a change be necessary? Could you easily move to be closer to family, or enjoy better weather or lower cost of living? Or does your CV need some strengthening? Are you confident in your next step? Do you truly understand how the research enterprise works?

Academic scientists often find that their mentoring needs to be supplemented outside of the existing lines of supervision. This is especially true when your assigned mentors only have limited availability, as is often the case for busy academics. Even when you secure time for your official mentoring, this is rarely done in a structured way that covers all the bases, whether pertinent now or a couple of years down the road. Importantly, inner work, perspective shifts, and paradigm changes are rarely addressed.

A structured approach is necessary. Through Apta Via Careers, I can guide you on increasing your visibility and strengthening your portfolio, and gaining a deeper understanding of your role in the larger system.

Productivity Support for Scientists and Other Free Spirits

Many of us become aware that the rigid structures of traditional schooling or corporate culture are not a good fit. While the structures provide good support and accountability for a typical person, others are frequently hindered by them because of the fluid nature of creativity. Intuitively looking for environments where they can make their best contribution, the free spirits often land in science labs, start businesses, or find success in creative endeavors.

While instinctively seeking the flexibility that non-traditional environments offer, we often struggle to create our own structures within the open space provided. Yet, without structures and systems, we end up spinning our wheels, work expands to fill time available, and important things like family time or recovery fall off the schedule. Through Apta Via Careers, I offer adaptable techniques and templates specific to academic research. I also work more broadly with each client to build tools they need, be it for work or home. There is no pre-existing blueprint – each person is unique, with different motivation sources or recovery needs, with different ways to structure information or organize a complex to-do list, and I honor that.

A good knowledge of self and an appropriate structuring of your time commitments are essential. I can guide you in getting to know how your brain works and then building the tools you need to stay on track and perform to your full ability, so that the important work gets done and the important personal values and needs are honored.
