FAQ

How will we meet?

We will meet over Google Meet, typically for 45 minutes. Longer sessions sometimes make sense and will be discussed separately.

How long should I expect to be in coaching?

I offer individual sessions and 6-session packages, to be used over a 3-month period, which is typically sufficient to cover the basics, tackle an acute issue, or give you direction to pursue independently. If you are interested in mastery of a new domain (e.g., project management), I have found that that can take several months or more. The time is needed for the brain to rewire, so that the new way of thinking becomes second nature. Your mileage may vary, and we can meet weekly, monthly, or as needed while you pursue your goal, and you can start and stop at any time. It is, of course, possible to consume information much more quickly, but the rewiring cannot be rushed and crash courses tend to be less effective than an extended, consistent, low-level effort.

Do you only serve academic researchers?

No, not only academic researchers. I serve two partly overlapping populations:

  • I am the best positioned to help academic scientists with guidance on advancing their careers.
  • Ideally, others would do better with a coach specializing in their goal area, such as entrepreneurship, personal development, etc. However, there is a shortage of adequate support for highly capable individuals, and I believe that, with the training I undertook, I can serve this population better than domain experts who do not understand the highly capable/driven neurotype.

Are there people you will not take on as clients?

For the research career program, if we are submitting grant proposals to the same NIH study sections, I cannot coach you due to conflict of interest. I will also not coach PhD students, as there are others better positioned to provide guidance.
